The Week Ahead
THE WEEK AHEAD
Sunday, September 6
Good morning.
Labor Day gives us one more day before the week really starts, and the calendar seems to know it.
There is still a little long-weekend business to finish today and Monday. Tuesday is the civic day. Thursday picks things back up with the Growing Kids Sale and a free concert on the riverfront.
No need to make this harder than it is. Here’s the useful stuff.
WEEK AT A GLANCE
SUNDAY
🎃 Parrot Island’s Halloween Weekend runs from 11 AM to 6 PM.
🎤 Rick Ross plays Choctaw Pocola at 8 PM.
MONDAY
⛳ Last chance for Creekmore Park Mini Golf before it closes for the season.
🗑️ Labor Day changes trash collection, transit and library hours.
TUESDAY
👶 Wiggle Worms Storytime starts at 10 AM.
🌳 Fort Smith Planning Commission meets at 5:30 PM.
🧬 Genealogy class starts at 5:30 PM.
🏛️ Fort Smith Board of Directors study session starts at 6 PM.
THURSDAY
🧸 Growing Kids Sale opens at 11 AM.
🎵 Save a Life Concert starts at 5:30 PM at the Riverfront Amphitheater.
🎤 Bethnie Rose plays 906 at 7 PM.
ONE MORE DAY OF WEEKEND
Parrot Island is apparently ready for Halloween
If Labor Day weekend is not quite over at your house, Parrot Island has one more day of its Halloween Weekend today.
The park is open from 11 AM to 6 PM with Halloween decorations, costume contests and seasonal activities during regular daytime hours.
Platinum season pass holders also get the Friend Frenzy promotion today and Monday, which lets them bring one friend free.
Rick Ross is in Pocola tonight
Rick Ross takes the CenterStage at Choctaw Casino & Resort-Pocola tonight.
Doors open at 7 PM and the show starts at 8. Guests under 18 have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
If you skipped the weekend plans and want one more Sunday-night option, this one is only a short drive across the Oklahoma line.
MONDAY: ONE LAST ROUND

Creekmore Park Mini Golf closes for the season after Labor Day.
Monday is the last chance to play, with the course open from noon to 6 PM.
And somehow it is still only $2 per round, cash only.
If you have been saying all summer that you were going to take the kids, this is the point where “sometime” has officially become Monday.
Also useful Monday
Fort Smith is on its Labor Day schedule.
The landfill, Solid Waste offices and residential collection are closed. If your normal residential trash day is Monday, collection moves to Wednesday, Sept. 9.
Fort Smith Transit will not run Monday, and all Fort Smith Public Library locations will be closed.
That is boring information right up until you are standing beside a trash cart wondering why nobody came.

Barling meets Tuesday too
The Barling Board of Directors meets Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.
The city’s current meeting listing still does not provide a location or posted agenda, so there is not much more useful detail to give you yet.
IF CITY MEETINGS ARE NOT YOUR TUESDAY
The Fort Smith Public Library has two options on opposite ends of the age spectrum.
Wiggle Worms Storytime runs from 10 to 11 AM at the Main Library for babies up to 24 months and their caregivers.
Then Genealogy Classes runs from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in the Campbell Board Room for school-age kids, teens and adults interested in digging into family history.
Both are at the Main Library, 3201 Rogers Ave.
THURSDAY PICKS THINGS BACK UP
Growing Kids Sale opens at Kay Rodgers Park
If your kids managed to outgrow half their clothes over the summer, Thursday might be useful.
The fall Growing Kids Sale opens at Kay Rodgers Park Expo and runs through Saturday, with gently used children’s clothing, toys and equipment.
Public shopping starts at 11 AM Thursday and runs until 7 PM. Admission and parking are free.
Growing Kids Text Club members can get in an hour earlier at 10 AM.
Kay Rodgers Park Expo
4400 Midland Blvd., Fort Smith
A free concert on the riverfront Thursday night
Harbor House Prevention Programs is holding its Save a Life Concert Thursday at the Riverfront Amphitheater as part of National Recovery Month. Music starts at 5:30 PM with Troy Edwards & The Remedies, Scott Bartholomew, and Coco & The Moto Psychos. The concert is free. Food is free. Activities are free. It is also listed as family-friendly. | ![]() |
That makes this one of the easier Thursday-night decisions of the week.
Riverfront Amphitheater
121 Riverfront Drive, Fort Smith
Thursday at 5:30 PM
One more Thursday night option
Bethnie Rose plays 906 Cocktail and Cigar Lounge from 7 to 10 PM Thursday.
The current event listing does not give an admission price, so check with 906 if that matters before heading downtown.
